When you start out in a home based business, time management is an element of business management often overlooked or ignored.
Sure enough, we all know someone in small business who races about like a madman all day, without enough hours in each day, all they do is hurry and get worked up – is it that this person is you! At the week’s end, when the pace settles, what have you taken from it? Do you review the day and wonder “what happened to the hours, I didn’t get as much finished as I intended to. If this reads familiar, then you might simply have an organisational and time management problem.
Successful people don’t ever seem to rush, they stay composed and unflustered. The difference between them and everybody else is they have accomplished time management.
What is time management? It is simply allocating time in your day in an organised and efficient way. Before we can really get how to time manage our day, we must ask ourselves what we are hoping to accomplish today, this week, this year and up to ten years from now. This is “Goal setting”.
The top process in my preference to take on goals is to write them down. You should review your goals at points to make sure that they are meaningful and workable but not so simple that you don’t need to try to achieve them otherwise what is the meaning of the goals in the first place?
At the beginning of a working year you should take time and ponder what you desire to accomplish this year. It can be that you want to gross up your profits by 20%, you can hope to move into different premises, you could hope to reduce your debt significantly. At the first day of every working week you might write down on a note pad or in your diary the signifcant jobs that need to be completed this week, and check on them every day to check that you’re making progress and hopefully wipe some of your projects off the list.

Each aspect of work you have to complete needs to be written down for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, so you don’t put off to do it and secondly, so you keep every day planned and you realise your daily goals. Be sensitive to initiating jobs and not completing them. This would become tomorrow in a plethora of not completed jobs and can cause “list blowout”.
You will end up with your list being a mile long and you will throw the towel in in despair and revert back to those habits of getting yourself in confusion during the day and accomplishing nothing.
Remember that every day you accomplish your goals and mark off all the projects on your list, you get a little bit closer to succeeding in your weekly and soon your yearly and long term goals.
A few pointers on Time Management:
- Do it once and do it well, it’s frustrating coming back to the task and needing to redo it.
- Learn to civilly say to people when you’re busy working and that you will return to them at a later point.
- Learn to pass out items that really don’t need your direct participation.
- Don’t embark on wild goose chases.
- Don’t fizzle away time on phone calls that can’t assist with something.
- Don’t procrastinate.
- Look at your list of items to do regularly throughout the day.
- “Map out your day” in the shower and schedule out your daily list as soon as you arrive at work. Don’t stop what you begin.
- Prioritise every day, always do things in their order of priority to you and your clients.
Don’t get in with time wasters, people who will only start to chat all day, and if they are your workers, set them straight, or get rid of them.

LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. An important point to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your wall all at once. The way a DLP projector works is very different and even the way an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to creating an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then combine each coloured element of the image into the single full image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the best brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have added a white segment in the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this further damages colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of producing. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications compared to many LCD projectors. Initially, this appears to be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is being used. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you plan to see requires moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because all colours are sent simultaneously. DLP designers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up error, but the price tag of these projectors make them impractical for most businesses and consumers.
Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and they taught you how the various colours of light refract various amounts when passing through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in a different way. Generally with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will come up above and some blue will come up below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. While being built LCD projectors can be fixed to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is directed on separate LCD panels.
The one veritable plus (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. To get paid, you would figure is essentially crucial in your business because if you are not being paid, what’s the point in business?
You would be laughing at the loads of business people who have their customers to make payment when and if they get on with it. I know of one business owner who repeatedly gets bad debts like weeds. After you know all this information, contact the branch and make for sure that they do use an account then. Then, call all of the trade reference and request if they pay their bills punctually or if they have any difficulties with them.
Most people will be willing to tell you if the person is troublesome. If everything is OK, allow them a moderate level of debt, say no more than $500 (depending on your business). Monitor the operation of the account for a few months before allowing this amount to be exceeded.

When starting up a home business, time management is an aspect of business management often overlooked or left out of the equation.
Surely we all know a person in small business who races around like a madman all day, rarely enough hours in every day, all they do is panic and get overtaken – is it that this person is you! At the day’s end, when the dust settles, what have you completed? Do you think about the day and wonder “what happened to the day, I didn’t get as much finished as I intended to. If this reads familiar, then you might simply have an organisational and time management problem.
Successful people don’t seem to rush, they remain composed and unflustered. The difference between them and the others is they achieve time management.
What is time management? It is merely planning the clock in your day in an organised and efficient scheme. Before we can truly get how to time manage our day, we must question ourselves what we are attempting to achieve today, this week, this year and possibly even ten years from now. This is “Goal setting”.
The easiest process in my preference to achieve goals is to write them down. You can review your goals sometimes to ensure that they are appropriate and achievable but not so easy that you don’t need to try hard to achieve them otherwise what is the purpose of the goals in the first place?
From the start of every new working year you can pause and think about what you desire to complete this year. It may be that you hope to enlarge your profits by 20%, you perhaps decide to move into bigger premises, you can hope to take away from your debt significantly. At the first day of a new working week you can write down on a note pad or in your diary the important projects that have to be finalised this week, and look back to them at each day to be sure that you’re making progress and hopefully check some of the chores from the list.
You could have the list on your desk or at a place where you could be constantly reminded of what has to be achieved this week. Your list can be in order of urgency so that the impending tasks at the top of the list get accomplished early. Any of the work not achieved this week will be taken up to next week on a higher ranking, this will make sure it gets ticked off.
The next thing you may not be doing is giving yourself a daily list of chores to take care of. This may assist keep you focused throughout the day. Again, this list may be placed where you can constantly check on it and mark off the tasks finished. Writing off the items should allow you a touch of accomplishment and let you know how you are progressing through the day. Always adhere to this list when possible and continue working from high priority to the lowest priority. I know difficulties sometimes come up during the day that might throw the whole day out of whack, but you need to either take on the problem and then get back to the list or if the new problem isn’t as urgent as some of the tasks on your list then target it at the bottom on your list and continue doing the task you were doing.
Each aspect of work you plan to get done can be written down for a numerous reasons. Firstly, so you don’t forget to do it and secondly, so you keep your day outlined and you get your daily goals. Beware beginning items and not completing them. This can show up tomorrow in a mushroom cloud of not completed chores and could cause “list blowout”.
You will end up with your list being a mile long and you will give it up in despair and reverse back to old habits of working in panic all day and accomplishing nothing.
Remember every day you plan your goals and polish off everything on your list, you will be a step closer to accomplishing your weekly and ultimately your yearly and long term goals.

- Do it once and do it well, it’s wasteful reverting to the item and needing to redo it.
- Learn to nicely communicate to people when you’re busy and that you can get back to them at a later time.
- Learn to give other people work that actually don’t demand your involvement.
- Don’t go on wild goose chases.
- Don’t waste time with phone calls that cannot do something.
- Don’t procrastinate.
- Review your list of chores to do often throughout your day.
- “Map out your day” in the car and schedule out your daily list right when you arrive at work. Achieve what you start.
- Prioritise habitually, always do jobs in their order of necessity to you and your customers.
Avoid time wasters, people that only go off to chat all day, and if they are your employees, set them straight, or get rid of them.
